IFSS Dryland World Championship Draws Record Entries
Written by Administrator
Sunday, 11 December 2011
By Bernard Pepin, IFSS Vice President for Sport
and Sally O’Sullivan Bair, IFSS Secretary General

With 418 participants from 23 countries and over a thousand dogs, the IFSS 2011 Dryland World Championships in Borken, Germany, drew a record number of entries. Tucked in western Germany close to the Dutch border, Borken is a lovely city of about 13,000 inhabitants. Its hospitality couldn’t have been warmer.

Friday evening’s opening ceremonies began with the traditional parade of athletes marching to the music of their respective national anthems. UK’s team, donning kilts, stole the show when their federation’s president, Charlie Bricknell, jumped up on one of the tables and flipped his kilt (not indiscreetly) to prove to all what is traditionally worn under these tartan garments.

Minneapolis, Minnesota USA, hosts IFSS Council Meeting

Written by Sally O’Sullivan Bair, IFSS Secretary General,
and Bengt Pontén, IFSS President

IFSS (International Federation of Sleddog Sports) Council members gathered for their annual meeting in Minneapolis, Minnesota USA, on September 23-25, 2011. Many controversial and pressing issues were under discussion. A Saturday evening dinner and grill was hosted by IFSS Secretary General Sally Bair and the Mushing USA Board of Directors at a local Minneapolis home. Time did not allow for tourist activities, but the meeting took place at a site near the famous Mall of America, a huge shopping complex, and many took advantage of this.

Important decisions were made on the following issues:
  • Snow Dogs of Russia was accepted as a second Russia provisional member of IFSS. They and Russia’s Tver Federation are urged to join forces to develop a National Russian Federation. (IFSS allows up to two provisional members from a country but only one voting member.)
  • The Council decided that IFSS will move its headquarters to Europe and employ a paid secretary general and have a secretary in the USA.
  • IFSS Council made a new proposal to ISDRA (International Sled Dog Racing Association) concerning the World Cup North America (WCpNA).
~ ISDRA would accredit World Cup (WCp) races in USA according to the original proposal and send the results to IFSS.
~ Mushing Canada would accredit World Cup races in Canada (exactly how would be determined) and send the results to IFSS.
~ IFSS would calculate the results for the WCpNA and the overall WCp.
This proposal was rejected by ISDRA’s Board, which means that there will be no joint World Cup North America this season.
  • It was decided that the dryland and snow World Championships (WCh) for 2013 should take place on different continents in the same year.
  • Italy was awarded the 2013 Dryland WCh. A base program for WCh classes is to be set up for the upcoming WCh.
  •

IFSS extends its thanks to Sally Bair and Mushing USA for their organization of the meeting. Although the proposal for the WCpNA was rejected by ISDRA, IFSS will still continue to work with ISDRA for common ground in unifying the two organizations.
